Italy Siesta
My photography project began in September 2020 in Catania, Sicily, and ended in Naples in March 2025. I returned to Naples and Sicily several times to explore urban areas. I’d like to thank Hamburg-based graphic designer Max Prediger for the title “Italy Siesta”. This was truly the idea: to walk through the streets and photograph the urban spaces while people rested. I was very lucky to meet the right persons in both Naples and Palermo who helped me navigate different neighbourhoods, zones, and environments. I’d like to thank Free Walking Tour Napoli (Raffaele and Roberto), Patrizia Ciotola from Naples and her friends, and Domenico from Palermo, the best driver in the world. Southern Italy is a very open-minded country with people who love to meet people from outside who are interested in their culture. Since I’ve known Naples, I’ve known a whole world. It’s wonderful how easy it is to talk to people there and make new friends. In Naples, as in Sicily, life’s challenges can be overwhelming, but the people have a warm energy that keeps them from giving up too quickly in the face of challenges. The sun may shine brightly, but it can hardly warm the lives of those who are wounded. As Goethe said: Where there is much light, there is also a strong shadow!
