Valère Novarina

A project and commission by Deutschlandfunk, Berlin.

I met the painter, scenographer, poet and playwright Valère Novarina first in his studio in Paris, in October 2017. He made four drawings for me, and I could photograph the process. The next step took place in Berlin, with Novarinas translator Leopold von Verschuer, also the director of the radio play, a work based on Novarina’s text „Speech to the Animals“. Afterwards we entered the radio studio in Berlin for the production of the play, spoken mostly by the actors Jens Harzer and Agnès Sourdillon. In March 2018, I met Novarina again in his studio in the countryside near Gadencourt where his large paintings come into life. It was a good experience to get involved in this process of creation coming closer and closer to an artist who opened up first his brain and then his heart to me, the photographer.
